With this long winter almost behind us I’m dreaming of fishing out on the ocean. I’ve never fished for swordfish, but my latest article enclosed is about how my commercial fisherman friends sometimes harpooned a swordfish. Sounds fascinating but don’t think I want to go 200 miles out to sea after researching my survival at sea books! And since we are on the subject of fishing I thought I’d start a bi-weekly “You Gotta Be Kidding Me” commentary. My latest is that now that I’m divorced and living in a cottage on a lake in Plymouth, I’ve spent time looking out the window at ice fisherman. I still can’t get it through my head that anyone would willingly sit out on the wind-swept ice in a chair huddled over a hole to catch a fish. Either I’m getting soft or these icefisherman are doing it for one of the following reasons: A) have a bad case of cabin fever, B) Will do anything to escape their wives or C) actually like the taste of perch!
PS: Be sure to check out the link here in the blog to the Chronicle Television show feature on the story I described in my book Overboard!

I caught an 85 pound swordfish on 40 pound test.. 22 years ago in key largo. Took me 41/2 hours. I never relinquished the rod. It was exhilerating and sad; so I made sure to mount his fine bill and store away lots of pate.I was 34 at the time and the battle between woman and fish held significance onto itself, but I wouldn’t do it again.
They are too magnificient and deserve to live out their lives in the water. I did win the class at the Ocean Reef Club for woman and test weight, thou.
